Locked Up: A Comprehensive Review
Day 5/30
In my search for Spanish series to watch; because they seem to be the best type of series lately, I bumped into Vis a Vis: Locked Up.
Before even checking the ratings, etc. I already knew it was my next watch because I could see familiar fav. faces. If you watched La Casa de Papel: Money Heist you’ll recognise Alba Flores (Nairobi) and Najwa Nimri (Alicia, who played the annoyingly smart detective).
It’s a mix of serial, crime action, thriller and drama.
The story:
The show follows the story of Macarena Ferreiro who was set up by her lover to take the blame for corporate fraud. In jail, she finds herself surrounded by tough, ruthless criminals like Zulema, Anabel, Saray, etc. with whom she has to find ways to get along with. Macarena came into the prison naive and weak but best believe she didn’t come out the same way.
Season 1 started out a bit slow and to be honest I almost stopped watching it after the first season but I had to see where things would end so I kept going.
And I don’t regret continuing at all because the remaining seasons made up for the first. In folds.
Favorite Characters:
- Zulema Zahir (Najwa Nimri)
The baddest, b#tch in the series. She’s one wicked, ruthless character whose only goal is to be free. No matter the ‘how’. Her acting skills are top-notch, she played the villain role perfectly and I don’t even know how to hate her.
2. Soledad Nunez
She’s basically ‘the mother’. No matter what how mean or lost any of the girls are, she’s willing to care for anyone of them who needs her help. She went through a lot in the show, from having a heart attack to losing her husband on her wedding day while in jail. Her exit was really emotional and I could watch the episode over and over again.
3. Goya
Goya is just one big, mean, territorial bully that I find interesting because she has this weird funny attitude going on.
Least Favorite Characters
- Sandoval:
Sandoval plays the role of the pervert-prison doctor who enjoys taking advantage of new and helpless inmates. I don’t know how but there’s something about his thick voice that itches my ear. He got the ending he deserved although I wasn’t satisfied enough. But he got it and that’s what matters.
2. Valbuena:
A frustrated, irritating rapist warden, period. It just annoys me that he left the show without any form punishment or ‘karma’. I guess it’s to show that well, some bad people do get away with it.
Over 10, I’ll rate the series a 9.5. That’s how much I enjoyed watching it.
