At risk of having Glaucoma
Don’t play with your eyes
Sometime in August, I visited the eye clinic to get fitted for medicated blue lens glasses.
I’d heard a lot about how staring at a bare computer screen for so long cannot be healthy & it’s best to be safe than sorry uno.
Well, I went I got fitted for the glasses.
And I also got diagnosed with Normal-Tension Glaucoma (NTG)
I’d never heard about that term before in my entire life so when they said that, I was like huh?????
It was a scary couple of minutes because I’d always thought I had impeccable eyesight.
I still do.
Also, I only went for glasses, what do you mean my right eye is at risk? (part of me thought it was a scam haha)
“Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which is crucial for good vision. This damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye, known as intraocular pressure. Glaucoma can lead to vision loss or even blindness if not treated properly.”
But as it turns out nobody is scamming anybody & it’s just a bitter pill I was finding hard to swallow. Now I’m on medications & I have to go for tests regularly.
It’s not fun.

But it’s also the best-case scenario I could ask for at this point because I have a chance at early treatment without it suddenly getting worse.
I stumbled on a podcast episode a few days ago by Diary of a CEO where he interviewed an optometrist & I clicked it at the speed of light because now I’m extra attentive to related subjects.
The guest came to burst myths. Part of what he said was that there isn’t sufficient research to prove that blue light glasses actually work. But the anti-glare effect can be useful for protection (so it’s not a total waste, I guess)
He also said that “carrots for better eyesight” originated from a war conspiracy haha.
He mentioned that pineapples were good for the eyes but most importantly, green leafy vegetables.
Also, never ever stare at the sun.
Feel free to listen to the podcast yourself & pick one or 2 lessons:
If the blue light glasses I’m using aren’t actually as effective as people say they are, I won’t be mad at that. Because they’re the reason I went to get checked in the first place.
“the eye is too important of an organ for people to only pay attention to it when something feels wrong” — Dr. Joseph Allen the optometrist
So if you’ve been looking for a sign to get that eye checked, this is it!
Dr Allen also said 1 checkup a year is enough.
“an eye checkup is the least invasive procedure that reveals the most about a human health condition”
You really won’t be helping anybody but yourself if you do this, so consider.
But until then, here are some tips I’ve managed to gather so far;
- Stay hydrated
- Wear sunglasses — the skin around the eyes is the most sensitive
- Leafy greens, fish, vitamin C >>>
- Take breaks from screens (ugh this one can be hard)
- Being diabetic is a risk
- Don’t smoke
- Get enough sleep
- Avoid rubbing your eyes (another difficult one).
